Mark Rylance: ‘I’ll play another woman’ I’m sure,” says Mark Rylance, “that another actor will play that part and will play it wonderfully and differently and I would hope that the part will seem as natural to that actor as it seems to me.” He’s referring to the role of Johnny “Rooster” Byron, the vodka-swilling, drug-dispensing, ex-stuntman in Jez Butterworth’s Jerusalem. Last Sunday, Rylance won the Olivier Award for Best Actor…. [More....]

Beauty and the Crease: Strangest Medical Spa Treatments

For some of us, looking good amounts to copious doses of hair gel, a quick acne wash and showering at least twice a week. But then again, there are cultures where the hand is still an acceptable substitute for toilet paper. That being said, it shouldn’t be surprising that there are cultures on the opposite end of the spectrum – peoples and places that will go to mind-boggling lengths to eliminate one more wrinkle, get skin just a little bit smoother and hopefully change our innermost souls in the process. Or at least that’s the hope – because why else would someone pay $200 to smear bird poop on their face?

Below is a list of some of the most certifiably crazy medical spa treatments available.

1. The Geisha Facial

The name might sound innocent enough and it might even evoke the sensual image of a traditional Japanese geisha – until you discover that the geisha facial refers instead to a unique medical spa treatment that involves dabbing powder made from dehydrated bird droppings onto your face.

Used for centuries by Asian actors and actual geishas, the treatment has recently made its trip overseas and into some of the most high-profile spas in America – ranging from the famous Shizuka Spa in New York City to the more seasonable Diamond Hawaii Resort & Spa in Maui. Paying anywhere from $150 to $250 dollars for a single treatment, spa-goers from all over have been flocking to experience the skin-softening, enriching and smoothing power of the Geisha facial, with the treatment even making an awkward appearance on ABC’s morning talk show The View.

So next time you’re sitting under an awning and happen to find yourself the target of some renegade bird, simply remind yourself that those droppings that just landed on your new fedora might actually be worth more than the hat itself – that’s the miracle of capitalism.

2. Snake Massage

NBC’s hit reality show Fear Factor may not have been the first idea to capitalize off of sticking people into a vat full of snakes – apparently some spas have been making money off of this concept for decades. The only difference is that with snake therapies, it’s the people paying the spa instead of the other way around. Hailing all the way from Israel, one of the world’s most famous snake spas is not so discreetly named Ada Barak’s Carnivorous Plant Farm, where guests eagerly line up to be massaged by these typically dangerous and disgusting reptiles – which the owner describes as being “therapeutic.”

The massage typically costs around $80 and is said to “cure aching muscles and joints” and provide a “relaxing massage.” But as far as I can tell, the only thing keeping the snakes from being terrifying limb-less monstrosities is the price of the treatment, in which case my patented fart-sauna therapy costs $100 bucks, baby.

3. Butt Facials

Normally one wouldn’t associate a butt with a facial – that is until the wonderful world of beauty spas came along and combined the two. Yes, thanks to ever-more creative ways to market beauty, there are now an increasingly popular set of beauty spa treatments that apply the same techniques used on one’s face to improve the shape, skin and general posterity of one’s royal cheeks. And while some of these therapies focus more on cleaning and detoxifying, other forms of the treatment aim to reduce cellulite and reshape the buttocks for a more perfect pair of buns, such as is offered by the Smooth Synergy spa in New York City which designates special therapists for work on the derriere portion of the body. And though the treatment can be expensive – running from $60 to $300 for a 90 minute session – advocates of the treatment swear to its legitimacy.

“People used to always harass me because of my large rear-end,” Stacy Santiaggo from San Francisco said. “But after receiving my first butt-facial, I was signed to a modeling gig for Vogue magazine.”

While Stacy’s story might sound impressive, it is also made up. In fact, I couldn’t find any evidence anywhere that 90 minutes with a good set of hands can undo the years of snacking and sitting around that ultimately shape our butts.

4. Leech Therapy

While leeches have been used for centuries to combat a variety of ailments from fever to flatulence, it’s only recently that the slimy, wriggling blood-suckers have been making appearances in medical spas, and at up to several hundreds of dollars per session. Just to give you an idea of what this treatment entails, the beauty website www.Plasmetic.com lists the following as Procedure Highlights:
Highly trained medical leeches (how the hell do you train leeches?)
Shaving of the entire body before applying the leeches (I thought this was more commonly done for cancer patients)
Patient being immersed in turpentine (Turpentine? Really?)
Patient experiences a stinging sensation (you know, this is starting to not sound so fun)
It causes bleeding in the patient (okay, this is definitely not fun)
Oh! But it also makes the person look younger!

So if you’re like me, you’ll look over that list and take solace in the fact that only crazy people would subject themselves to such a disturbing “treatment.” Well, think again because apparently this nightmarish version of bloodletting has made its way to Hollywood and is being touted by the likes of Demi Moore.

“I feel like I’ve always been someone looking for the cutting edge of things that optimize your health and healing” said Demi Moore. “I was in Austria doing a cleanse and part of the treatment was leech therapy.”

Okay, I wish I were making this up – but unfortunately for the world, I’m not.

5. Swimming with the Fishes

It shouldn’t surprise you that a Japanese-originated medical spa treatment showed up on this list. Instead, you should be surprised that this entire list isn’t comprised of weird Japanese practices. But even so, the practice of using hundreds of tiny fish as a form of skin treatment seems to stand out above the rest of the crazy things Japanese do. This “unique” medical spa treatment has patrons “relaxing” in a tub full of fish to “clean and rejuvenate” the skin. Okay, so maybe the last line shouldn’t be in quotations, but it’s hard to believe that hundreds of nibbling goldfish (okay – they’re not technically goldfish) could be any more productive than rubbing a luffa sponge over your legs for a few minutes.

But according to experts on the topic, the fish eat away at dead skin and leave you feeling fresh and dandy without the uncomfortable disfigurement that comes from fish like wild piranha.

So in conclusion, if you’re ever feeling down about our current economic crises, perhaps you can take comfort in knowing that there’s still enough money out there somewhere for some to justify paying hundreds of dollars for ridiculous treatments involving bird poop, leeches and snake baths.

ROME TRENDY AND FASHIONABLE, THE NEW FACE OF THE ETERNAL CITY

The “New Roman Style” a fascinating itinerary to discover the hidden corners of Rome, from fashion to design, art and cuisine, here are all the most in places in the capital.

Rome the Eternal City? Of course, if you think of all the treasures and artistic masterpieces in the capital that represent human civilization from ancient Roman times, through the Renaissance and Baroque. But Rome is also much more than this. In recent years it has become an open-air artistic and cultural “workshop”. Alongside its historic monuments, the feature that distinguishes it around the globe, there are initiatives that look to the present and the future, just as in London, Paris and New York. There are flourishing modern art galleries, avant-garde buildings, trendy shops and night spots that go in for designer décor and minimal chic, while the oriental and ethnic styles hold sway in nearly all the neighbourhoods. In other words, you don’t need to go abroad to find out what is all the rage, because Rome has become a world leader in fashion, art and design.

In the spirit of Zen, with a minimalist look and a desire to seek out the trendiest places in the city, taste oriental dishes or enjoy the ritual of a fashionable aperitif follow our itinerary of the latest and most exotic spots in the capital.

A shop that has become one of the most popular in the city opened some time ago right next door to the Hotel dei Piranesi. It is a boutique, a feng shui furnishings centre, a florist’s, a café, a restaurant, an art gallery, a bookshop, a beauty salon, in a nutshell it is a concept store called Tad. In the very heart of Rome this is the perfect place to begin your day, it is a modular space of 1000 square metres, streamlined and decorated with gaudy colours, housing a varied collection of items for the home and for personal use. Give yourself a new look with the help of an expert stylist, buy a shantung garment and enjoy a coffee with an Arabic aroma to start the day with renewed energy. You’ll find the most original things with a particular focus on oriental trends (Tad, Via del Babuino, 155a Tel. 06 32669511).

Not far away, in Via Vittoria, there is another temple of oriental culture. It is called Thè Verde (Via Vittoria, 23 Tel. 06 32110174) after the green tea that is so popular in China and Japan. Entering this small shop is like plunging into a Zen atmosphere. Everything is arranged with the utmost care in a way that reminds you of the rules of feng shui. Soft lighting, large brickwork shelves and small niches enhance the display of very special objects that include, for example, Chinese vases, Middle-Eastern necklaces, silk and cashmere shawls, but above all tea services and the ingredients for the tea drinking ritual. Continuing down the same street, at number 55 you come to a young designer’s small jewellery shop Cristina Di Stefano Creazioni Orafe (Tel. 06 6791546). This very minimal shop has just opened and displays and sells fascinating designer jewellery in gold and silver with gemstones and precious stones in all shapes and colours. It is the ideal place if you’re looking for a special gift for a trendy spirited person who will be sure of wearing an absolutely original and unique piece of jewellery.

Obviously a piece of jewellery like this demands the right outfit to match it. Il Baco da Seta (Via Vittoria, 75 Tel. 06 6793907) is just the place for this. The name of this boutique means “silkworm” and here, of course, silk reigns supreme and it is worked in thousands of ways in colours that range from hemp to orange, from desert shades to Mediterranean hues. There are fascinating clothes by young designers who draw inspiration from the Orient and interpret the lines of samurai and geisha garments in a modern key. If you prefer the African style to the Orient, then pay a visit to Monies (Via Vittorai, 37) a small, chic, ethnic shop selling objects, furniture and items for home decoration inspired by the desert and safari style, and while we’re on the subject, pop into Exante Due at number 13 in the same street, where you’ll enjoy choosing really unusual pieces of costume jewellery.

Now it’s time for a coffee break or, if you want to be really fashionable, for a stylish aperitif. The “in” place is Shaki (Via Mario de’ Fiori, 29/a Tel. 06 6791694), a wine bar that has become a must for the young and trendy. It is small, but offers a great variety of teas and coffees with most unusual flavours, as well as appetizing snacks and good wine. Contemporary in style, everything here has that unmistakable designer touch, from the cups and plates to the glasses and napkins. If there is something that takes your fancy and you’d like to buy it, you can find it at the Shaki shop not far away in Piazza di Spagna (no. 65 Tel. 06 6786605).

We continue our itinerary through the new modish capital with a visit to the Galleria Colonna, named after the actor Alberto Sordi, which has recently reopened and become a focal point for Rome fashions. A short walk takes you to one of the latest bookstores in the Feltrinelli chain. This is a large space devoted to culture, which, as well as books and music, also has an art gallery that mounts exhibitions for young up-and-coming artists, photographers and sculptors, and a music bar where live jazz or blues is played at every Sunday brunch.

If you love technology and all the latest high-tech inventions, you’ll find two original shops in the Galleria Colonna. Tech it Easy has all the craziest and funniest designer electronic gadgets in circulation, and Sony Gallery displays the latest novelties by this Japanese company and is a real temple of high-tech.

Do you like the way out? Then Jam is the place for you. On the Corner of the Galleria Colonna, on the Via del Corso side is a vast space on two floors selling unusual, weird, crazy clothes, objects and souvenirs that sometimes verge on the kitsch, but are absolutely unique.

Now it’s time for lunch and we recommend two restaurants in the area. At Reef (Piazza Augusto Imperatore, 40/42 Tel. 06 68301430) the sea and its habitat feature in a minimalist key and are the theme of the whole design. Entering this restaurant is like plunging into tropical seas both as regards the décor and the menu. The undulating plates of glass resemble the rippling waves of the sea, the balustrades made of iron rods are close meshed like fishing nets, even the iron seems to have been rusted by salt water. The lighting and colours all create a soft atmosphere. And the food is really sublime. Gusto (Piazza Augusto Imperatore, 9 Tel. 06 3236363), however, is something else. Apart from being a very good restaurant, wine bar and pizzeria, it also has a bookstore mainly devoted to books on gastronomy from all over the world, and a shop, so it is the ideal place for those who like to read a newspaper or book over lunch.

Now we’ll take in some art. The Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna (Via delle Belle Arti, 131 Tel. 06 322981; Tues-Sat 8.30 am – 7.30 pm, Sun 9 am – 7.30 pm) is located in the Villa Borghese, one of the loveliest parks in Rome, and has one of the most interesting 19th-century Italian Neoclassical, Romantic and Futurist painting and sculpture, as well as works by many 20th-century artists including De Chirico, Morandi and Marini. Outside the gallery is the Caffè delle Arti, the perfect place for a coffee in the open air and it is very popular especially at lunchtime. Lovers of contemporary art can visit the very new exhibition space MACRO (Via Reggio Emilia, 54 Tel. 06 67107900 www.macro.roma.museum; Tues- Sun 9 am – 7 pm, public holidays 10 am – 2 pm, Mon closed). MACRO is housed in the converted Birra Peroni factory, built at the beginning of the 20th century and has become a dynamic, cultural centre that includes six exhibition rooms, a bookstore, a lecture hall, a workshop and a bar. It has a permanent collection of works by world famous contemporary artists from the 1960s to the present, and periodically mounts temporary art exhibitions.

Now it’s time to relax before facing Roman nightlife, devote a few hours to your personal well-being and enjoy an oriental ritual. Rome too has its Hammam (La Culla del Benessere, Via della Maratona, 87 Tel. 06 36298573) and it is here that you’ll forget your daily stress and fatigue in the absolute peace and quiet of this temple of beauty. Let yourself be carried away by the magical exotic atmosphere of distant lands, surrounded by objects and ornaments from Morocco, by walls painted in Mediterranean colours, and sofas and armchairs covered in rich fabrics. An oriental doctor will make you welcome and then follows the full Turkish bath ritual including washing with black, date oil soap, gommage, a massage and to finish off a fragrant cup of mint tea. Now in top form, looking really great you are ready for the Rome nightlife. An absolute must among the very latest gourmet haunts is The Place, in the Prati neighbourhood, (Via Alberico II, 27 Tel. 06 68307137). This is a restaurant and American bar in a very minimal eclectic style, which in addition to an interesting menu with dishes from all over the world, has live music every day ranging from jazz to blues, funky and ethnic. If you prefer to go to a concert of classical or modern music check the programme of the new Auditorium della Musica (Via Pietro De Coubertin Tel. 06 8082058 or 06 80242350/1; www.musicaperroma.it), designed by Renzo Piano, another temple of design, where the acoustics, thanks to the special system of lines and shapes, is really extraordinary. And if you want a late meal, next to the Auditorium is another cult place Red (Via Pietro De Coubertin, 30 Tel. 06 80691630), this is one of the ultimate designer night spots where the red of the small mushroom-shaped armchairs and curious tables sets the tone, and where you can have dinner or simply taste the delicious snacks late into the night.

Holidays in Japan: A Study of Cultures in contrast

There are two words which come to mind when considering a vacation in Japan: culture and contrasts. The richness and diversity of life in Japan is matched only by its enthusiasm for its own cultural heritage, and whether you stay a week, two weeks or many months, you will always find it astonishingly easy to feel at one and the same time, both very much at home, yet transported to a world that seems uniquely set apart from anywhere else.

Tokyo is one of the better known cities for many people to choose to visit. This is not only because of the 13 million inhabitants who help to create a city to call home, but because of the fact that it has become ever more popularized through Hollywood, with the James Bond film, ‘You Only Live Twice’ being filmed here, as well as ‘My Geisha’ and ‘Lost In Translation’.

The skyline, dominated by the snow peaked mountains in the distance, is a testament to modern architecture, with glass and steel entwined towards the skies; a remarkable feat, but don’t spend too long staring up at the heavens, because on the ground is the real Tokyo, with everything from exquisite sushi bars to trendy shopping experiences. If you enjoy modern, vibrant shopping, then you must make time to see the Harajuku on your Japanese vacation, often referred to as Tokyo’s Champs Elysees.

Or perhaps you might like to leave behind the bustling streets of Tokyo’s city centre and visit the breathtaking Meiji Jingu Shrine. The original shrine was erected in the early twentieth century, created from Japanese cypress and copper; sadly this was destroyed in World War II, but rebuilt in the fifties to create a magnificent modern masterpiece which very much captures the spirit with which the original was constructed. The Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery is based here, and it is well worth spending time to admire the beautiful murals which depict the life of the Emperor Meiji and his wife.

When it comes to dining in and around Tokyo during your vacation in Japan, as with much of Japan, the culture is one dominated by fish; indeed, the very symbol of Tokyo itself is a fish. It is well worth rousing yourself a little earlier than usual and heading towards the Tsukiji Fish Market , known more commonly as the Tokyo Metropolitan Wholesale Market.

The fish here is often so fresh it’s still moving! The sale of fish is frenetic and absorbing, and afterwards it is highly recommended that you enjoy the best of Japanese fish with an exquisite sushi breakfast. If you’ve never tried this, you really don’t know what you’re missing. Japan is full of contrasts, and to enjoy these at their best, it is worth diving in and participating in the traditional customs.

Before you leave Tokyo, another aspect of Japanese culture which you must experience, and which contrasts very much with the throb and hum of the city centre is the Hamarikyu Gardens. No vacation in Japan would be complete without seeing these beautiful gardens, occupying nearly a quarter of a million square meters. They provide a tranquil resting place, through which you can enjoy a pleasant walk, perhaps enjoying a traditional tea ceremony at the teashop in Nakashima, in the centre of the gardens. The flowers here are fabulous, with peony gardens and a plum tree grove just two examples of the areas which appeal, whatever the season. Depending on when you visit, there are a number of displays and exhibitions which demonstrate more of Japanese culture, such as Japanese goshawk hunting.

Many people today associate Kyoto with the international climate agreement (or disagreement!) but this former imperial capital of Japan holds many fascinating opportunities to explore the culture of Japan, and offers many contrasts with the city of Tokyo, despite both names being an anagram of each other. Situated within a beautiful, lush valley, harbored by the mountains of the Tamba highlands, the city of Kyoto offers the chance to experience Japanese customs, such as the art of calligraphy.

Of all written languages in the world, Chinese and Japanese symbols are perhaps the most artistic and decorative. Although Chinese sounds very different from Japanese, they use all of the same letter shapes, and it is well worth experiencing this for yourself. A true master can help anyone to feel the beauty of creating these exquisite shapes. If you’re interested in learning new things, then perhaps rather than taking part in a tea ceremony, you should indulge yourself in learning more about it, and experts in Kyoto will be more than willing to teach you this ancient tradition.

But for a real taste of Japanese culture and tradition during your Japanese vacation, there is one opportunity hidden away in Kyoto which is hard to find, yet well worth it if you know who to ask. The secrets of the Geisha have long been known, yet rarely understood; rarer still is to experience it for yourself, and even the Japanese consider it a great honor.

However, it is possible for westerners to experience the song and dance ceremonies of the Geisha, and nowhere else are the contrasts with modern western cultures more noticeable than amongst the culture and heritage of Japan’s Kyoto region. But be warned, you may well find yourself tearing up your return tickets once you have embraced the culture of a vacation in Japan.

Puccini – Madame Butterfly / Huang, Troxell

$11.65

Like the finest of film scores with its fluid beauty and succession of intensely romantic tunes, Puccini’s opera Madame Butterfly has a surprisingly cinematic feel. In 1995 director Frederic Mitterand exploited this quality of the story, exposing a young woman’s disillusionment against a backdrop of cultural chasms. Shot on location, with Tunisia doubling convincingly as a turn-of-the-century Naga…

What’s Happened With the Big Brother Housemates

So Big Brother is finally over, but how are they getting on now we here you ask. Well we’ve summed up all the latest celebrity gossip from the big brother contestants for your satisfaction!

Do You Remember This Happy Couple??

We caught up with Big Brother lovebirds Rex and Nicole doing a spot of shopping in Harvey Nicholls in London. After that they headed to Notting Hill for a bite to eat at Rex’s father’s restaurant, before heading to Harley Street to pick up some x-rays.

Just recently Rex was involved in a fight outside a club in Soho. “These five guys thought I was starting a fight and jumped me. I was really scared. It was five against one and I was surrounded.” Once Rex had got his x-ray results he was very guarded about the outcome. Speaking about the fate full night both Rex and Nicole admit if they had the choice to go on Big Brother again they wouldn’t claiming, “There are so many positives to it, but also so many negatives.”

Meanwhile we here plans for their new Osbourne style reality show are getting underway and Nicole revealed, “They’re going to follow our every move. They will film Rex opening a new restaurant and me with all my fashion.” Hang on did we miss something?

The Big Brother Boys Big Night Out…

Last night we caught up with former housemates Dale Howard and Stuart Pilkington leaving Faces nightclub after a personal appearance.

Despite recently confirming rumours he’s dating Chantelle Houghton, Dale was making the most of all the female attention. In fact we spotted the ladies man leaving the club with not one, not two, but three lucky ladies. Here’s hoping Chantelle’s not the jealous type!

Catching Up With Big Brother Housemates…

Oi don’t groan! Nobody is making you read this story and anyway you know full well that you can’t resist it so quit b*tching. Last night we caught up with Stepf McMichael as she headed to the Crystal Club in London with her new boyfriend (?) in tow. Meanwhile on the other side of town fellow BB housemate Sarah Folino was making her way to the Kitts Club sporting a Geisha Girl fancy dress outfit for the launch of one night in Japan. See we told you you wouldn’t be able to resist reading it, ha!

Big Brother Stars Snapped Up By The BBC…

Reality TV stars Luke and Bex are celebrating after being given the opportunity of a lifetime. The former Big Brother housemates have been lined up to host a BBC concert for this year’s Children In Need, which takes place in November. BBC insiders predict this could be the beginning of something big as it’s the first time any BB stars have been given the chance to host a live show…

“They’re naturals in front of the camera and they have amazing chemistry. It is in at the deep end. There will be no room for mistakes. They’ll have to be right on the money, but if they pull it off it could land them a mega TV deal.”

Mario Marconi Is Caught Cheating On Lisa…

Sleazy reality TV star Mario Marconi (née Shaun Astbury) was caught cheating on his long-term girlfriend Lisa Appleton just hours before he proposed to her live on camera in the Big Brother house.

CCTV images have emerged of Mario kissing a blonde woman in a hotel bar, just a few hours before he headed to the Big Brother studios in Elstree to declare his love for Lisa. Mario met the woman in question, Victoria Anderson, whilst she was enjoying a drink in the Premiere Inn bar *sniggers* with her boyfriend. When Victoria’s fella nipped outside for a cigarette, Mario swooped in on the girl and was caught kissing her on camera. Moments later, hotel security images show the couple entering the lift and heading toward Mario’s hotel room. The pair didn’t emerge from the boudoir for nearly five hours.

Mario has since admitted kissing the girl, but denied doing anything else, claiming she had “set him up”. Yes, yes of course, we’re sure it was all perfectly innocent. We wouldn’t be surprised if they just sat in that room playing scrabble, talking about politics and the precarious state of the UK’s economy. Yes, that sounds feasible…

What should i do for my 1 year anniversary?

we’re planning to have dinner at geisha house in hollywood, ca. we don’t know what to do the before and after. HELPP

Before you get there, you should probably get in your car and drive there. And after, maybe drive back?

There’s absolutely tons to do in Hollywood, I don’t see how one could be short on ideas. Even walking around Hollywood Blvd. is fun, and it’s a whole different scene at night.
