geisha kimono pattern
Hi all, Im getting a geisha tattoo done in a couple of weeks time and just wondering what colours I should get the kimono. I know that they wear seasonal colours and different patterns. I was just wondering if there were any patterns or colours that stood for something in particular. She is going to have smoke and cherry blossoms behind her. I want to make sure that the colours or design are true to the geishas if possible
The colors aren’t seasonal, only the patterns. If she’s going to be near cherry blossoms, you want some other spring pattern or a neutral pattern. Spring patterns include butterflies, cherry blossoms, irises, and wisteria. You could also include neutral things like royal carts. This website might help you pick some patterns: http://renku.home.att.net/500ESWd.html
Color-wise, kimono color matching can be complicated. There are entire charts just for helping people create well-coordinated kimono outfits. Personally, I think it would be a lot easier for you to look at a lot of pictures of geisha and maiko, find an outfit you like, and copy its color scheme. There are several thousand possibly useful pictures here: http://www.flickr.com/groups/geikoandmai…
Jade wearing BEAUTIFAL Kimono in red and blue obi belt
Hi I have now dressed Jade (she is one of the original head games doll heads) in a gorgous red shiny, yellow cherry blossom Kimono. I love this one as it looks royal and really stately and very well finished. I took my time and made a pattern from viewing the doll and analysing thw waist etc…
Then i hade to lay out the pattern on the fabric this was really hard as it had a fan shape to it due to the neck was not a straight line from top of shoulder to neck. It was lowerd to give a fitted collar with out dip like geisha but u still can with this one. I then sewed the sleeves etc….
and the obi was a simple rectangle sewn at ends and sewn half up EACH END TO MIDDLE. Then i fold it over the right way out to then stich front as u fold it inhalf when finished.
:0
Then the obi cord was made from a white THIN! CORD about length of body (work it out) and yeah…………………..

Understanding Your Asian-Style Fountain’s Symbolism
Whether as part of a general Asian décor style or for the practice of feng shui, Asian style water fountains are among the most popular varieties today. The water fountain specialists at Water Fountain Place have extensive experience with Asian-style fountains, and offer this quick guide to three traditional styles
Koi Water Fountains
Koi (a Japanese ornamental carp similar to goldfish) are probably the most popular Asian influence on modern water fountain design. They are especially popular in outdoor fountains. Many people think of the koi as an ancient symbol due to the West’s fascination with Eastern mysticism, but in fact, koi were first bread in Japan in the 1800s. As koi are often kept in Japanese gardens, a koi fountain evokes the idea of traditional activities such as poetry, contemplation and relaxation with one’s friends.
Note that Zen gardens are dry (not an easy environment for a carp!), so koi are not strictly a Zen symbol, but represent the “floating world” (Ukiyo) of artistic, pleasurable living that came to prominence after the end of Japan’s bloody civil wars. This is the age and environment that inspired famous woodblock prints of geisha, samurai and sumo wrestlers. So as you can see, a little fish on your fountain might mean a lot!
Raku Ware and Tea Ceremony Style Water Fountains
Raku Ware refers to a pottery style used in Japanese tea ceremony (chaonyu) vessels. Classic raku ware consists of a shiny black finish, the artistic imperfections (real or simulated) of handcrafted work. It’s a very popular style to transfer to water fountains. There are also a few fountains inspired by the modern style, which uses more color and symmetry.
Many indoor and outdoor fountains are even designed to mimic the appearance of tea ceremony vessels. This is fitting; in the Way of Tea (chado) the implements of the scoop, whisk and caddy are treated with extreme reverence. These elements can be incorporated into a fountain’s spout. Sculptures of flowers may also be present to acknowledge the role of a special flower arrangement in the actual ceremony. The Way of Tea is associated with meditation and skill in action. By practicing the tea ceremony with total devotion, one attains mushin (“no-mind”) or freedom from conscious distractions, so that the simple act of brewing tea becomes a form of meditation.
Chinese Coin Water Fountains and Zennigata
Old Chinese coins can serve as a decorative element in a water fountain or as the basis for the whole fountain’s design. Old Chinese coins have a square hole in the center. This allowed people to tie them together in strings. For centuries, Chinese folk religion has equated coinage with special power. Old coins were made into charms to ward off bad luck and of course, attract wealth and fortune. Coins are incorporated into amulets, clothing and even swords. Coins connect to water because water is a symbol of prosperity in feng shui.
Coin symbolism (and the designed of Chinese coins themselves) also made its way to other Asian societies, including Japan and Korea. Japanese coin-shaped basins called zennigata contain water used for misogi, the practice of ritual purification in the Shinto religion.

geisha arts

I have to do a genius bag for art and I want to make a geisha out of clay how would I do that?
the items in the bag are:
curled pipe-cleaners, fake leaves, tin foil and the bag, your suppot to use other items to make the sculpture and i want to use clay for the geshia… PLEASE help i need ideas!!!!!
You want to use clay… Could it be possible you use the curled iron pipes as a base for the kimono of the geisha or for the sleeves to have a sagging effect or just alternate. Fake leaves can be positioned to be either a fan for the geisha, the instrument they’re normally found strumming or possibly hair/designs on the dress – these all depend on the length and size of the leaves. Tine foil would be a darling effect for the mask effect of the face and back, it’ll stand apart from the clay.
Cover the bases (iron pipes) in clay, create a kimono from the bag, decorate the geisha with leaves and use the foil as the makeup.
The History & Art of Geisha – What Does a Geisha Do?
Geisha are professional female entertainers who perform traditional Japanese arts at banquets.
Girls who wish to become a geisha, have to go through a rigid apprenticeship during which they learn various traditional arts such as playing instruments, singing, dancing, but also conversation and other social skills. In Kyoto, geisha apprentices are called “maiko”.
Geisha are dressed in a kimono, and their faces are made up very pale. As a common tourist, you may be able to spot a maiko in some districts of Kyoto, such as Gion and Pontocho or in Kanazawa’s Higashi Geisha District.

Dishes Simplified
Getting married soon? I bet homeware is the last thing on your mind right now. You are probably too tied up discussing future financing with your father-in-law, sidestepping prying questions about future grandchildren and juggling a million little wedding details like confetti VS bubbles, string quartet VS DJ and Maid of Honour VS Old School Friend. I suspect at this stage you are happy if you find a moment to nip to the loo, let alone a whole afternoon to choose the perfect set of tableware to feature on your registry.
This is why we have decided to put together a little how-to list for your convenience (we all know how brides-to-be enjoy little lists, particularly if you get to a point where you can check something off). So here goes:
1. Choose one store to go to:
Choice is fantastic, but too much of a good thing can be a little overwhelming. Rather than scouring a whole bunch of smaller stores, we suggest that you find a department store in your vicinity that stocks a wide array of dinnerware. You may still feel a little overwhelmed, but at least this way you can be confused in one location.
2. Do not take too many people along: Mother, sister, sister-in-law, best friend – we realise that two heads are better than one, but having too many opinions are going to make things harder rather than easier. Choose one, maximum two, people (whose taste and judgement you trust unequivocally) to accompany you on this very important shopping trip and discuss beforehand how much they are allowed to meddle. Remember that you are going to be sharing this tableware with your fiancé, not your friend/mother/sister-in-law and that you should keep his taste in mind as well. If he likes a minimalist atmosphere chances are he won’t be too impressed by Rococo-esque china.
3. Be sure what you want before you step inside the store:
Discuss you preferences with your partner before you set out on your shopping trip. The first choice you have to make is with regard to pattern. Aside from all-white there are four basic pattern types. These include:
• Floral – features flowers and foliage
• Geometric – think Op Art
• Banded – plain white/ivory banded with gold/platinum
• Oriental – think Memoirs of a Geisha
The pattern you choose should reflect your lifestyle and complement your interior. It is normally best to purchase a set of tableware for everyday use and to list on your registry the set you want for more formal occasions.
4. Don’t over-think it: Yes, homeware is an investment, but you shouldn’t be too concerned with whether or not the china you choose will still be in fashion in 20 years’ time. You can always purchase new pieces down the line to ensure that the look of your tableware remains current – right now you should be excited to pull your plates out when you have company over.
There you go – the four golden rules to abide by when choosing dinnerware to feature on your wedding registry. Happy hunting!

antique japanese geisha dolls

How can I remove dust from antique doll clothing?
I have a pre-WWII Japanese Geisha doll that is fixed to her stand. She and her clothing were hand made, and I want to restore her. She is covered in dust, and it’s making the colors look faded on her kimono. I’ve used a makeup brush(bought new just for this project) and a can of air to remove most of it, but there is still a lot that I can’t get. Any suggestions on how to remove it without damaging her?
When I was much younger my parents did a lot of crafting with stained glass. One of their projects was to make a display case for a doll just like you described, which my uncle owned. Once the case was made my mom had the chore of cleaning the doll before it was enclosed in the case.
Back then the cosmetic brush was available but the canned air was not so my mom used an infants nasal aspirator (the blue bulb thing used to clean the mucus out of an infants nose when they have a cold.) I seem to recall that this worked quite well. For the really hard to reach areas my mom purchase a contour eye shadow brush. The bristles were stiffer then a regular eye shadow brush, and the whole shape was kind of like a wedge. The bristles at one end were shorter then the bristles at the other end.
I am also thinking that a tiny stencil brush might work, but only if the fabric of the dolls clothing is in really good shape.
Good Luck
Antique Japanese Lady Music Box, please help name the tune its playing
I bought this Japanese Geisha doll from and antique store in Chesapeake, VA back in 1984 for $15. I had it stored in my closet all these years and just forgot about it. It has a stamp on the bottom Nishi ND Doll, Made in Japan and she stands on a musicbox that plays a tune I cannot identify, and that is why I need help here. Does anyone know the name of this tune? Does anyone know if it has any value? Its in mint condition. I hope someone can at least tell me the name of the tune. Thanks.
