I need a few websites and some books, possibly articles and essays as well. I am writing a research paper and I want to do it over Geisha, but I have no idea where to start. It is for a Development of Theatre class.
My topics can include the following:
1) author: life & works of a specific author
2) group or organization: history and work of a specific group or organization
3) director, actor, acting, teacher, designer, philosopher or critic: life & work of an individual who made a significant impact on the period of theatre history explored (which would be from ancient Greek to the 1670’s)
I’m not sure if I even want to do it over Geisha, so if anyone has any other good ideas I would really appreciate it. I definitely do not want to do anything from ancient Greece.
Whatever you do, do NOT use “Memoirs of a Geisha.” It is a work of fiction, and has some serious issues with getting the facts straight.
For books, start with Mineko Iwasaki’s biography (my copy is called “Geisha, A Life,” but I’ve seen the same book titled “Geisha of Gion” as well), Liza Dalby’s book on geisha (just called “Geisha,” I think), and Lesley Downer’s “Women of the Pleasure Quarters.” There is an entire section of the Immortal Geisha forums devoted to geisha and maiko. YouTube has several documentaries and parts of documentaries floating around.
However, keep in mind that geisha as we know them today didn’t pop up until the 18th century, so if you can’t study later than the late 17th century you might be stuck. If you really want to do something Japanese, you might be better off with Noh theater, which has been around since the 14th century.
