How can I remove dust from antique doll clothing?

I have a pre-WWII Japanese Geisha doll that is fixed to her stand. She and her clothing were hand made, and I want to restore her. She is covered in dust, and it’s making the colors look faded on her kimono. I’ve used a makeup brush(bought new just for this project) and a can of air to remove most of it, but there is still a lot that I can’t get. Any suggestions on how to remove it without damaging her?

When I was much younger my parents did a lot of crafting with stained glass. One of their projects was to make a display case for a doll just like you described, which my uncle owned. Once the case was made my mom had the chore of cleaning the doll before it was enclosed in the case.

Back then the cosmetic brush was available but the canned air was not so my mom used an infants nasal aspirator (the blue bulb thing used to clean the mucus out of an infants nose when they have a cold.) I seem to recall that this worked quite well. For the really hard to reach areas my mom purchase a contour eye shadow brush. The bristles were stiffer then a regular eye shadow brush, and the whole shape was kind of like a wedge. The bristles at one end were shorter then the bristles at the other end.

I am also thinking that a tiny stencil brush might work, but only if the fabric of the dolls clothing is in really good shape.

Antique Japanese Lady Music Box, please help name the tune its playing

I bought this Japanese Geisha doll from and antique store in Chesapeake, VA back in 1984 for $15. I had it stored in my closet all these years and just forgot about it. It has a stamp on the bottom Nishi ND Doll, Made in Japan and she stands on a musicbox that plays a tune I cannot identify, and that is why I need help here. Does anyone know the name of this tune? Does anyone know if it has any value? Its in mint condition. I hope someone can at least tell me the name of the tune. Thanks.

Holidays in Japan: A Study of Cultures in contrast

There are two words which come to mind when considering a vacation in Japan: culture and contrasts. The richness and diversity of life in Japan is matched only by its enthusiasm for its own cultural heritage, and whether you stay a week, two weeks or many months, you will always find it astonishingly easy to feel at one and the same time, both very much at home, yet transported to a world that seems uniquely set apart from anywhere else.

The skyline, dominated by the snow peaked mountains in the distance, is a testament to modern architecture, with glass and steel entwined towards the skies; a remarkable feat, but don’t spend too long staring up at the heavens, because on the ground is the real Tokyo, with everything from exquisite sushi bars to trendy shopping experiences. If you enjoy modern, vibrant shopping, then you must make time to see the Harajuku on your Japanese vacation, often referred to as Tokyo’s Champs Elysees.

Or perhaps you might like to leave behind the bustling streets of Tokyo’s city centre and visit the breathtaking Meiji Jingu Shrine. The original shrine was erected in the early twentieth century, created from Japanese cypress and copper; sadly this was destroyed in World War II, but rebuilt in the fifties to create a magnificent modern masterpiece which very much captures the spirit with which the original was constructed. The Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery is based here, and it is well worth spending time to admire the beautiful murals which depict the life of the Emperor Meiji and his wife.

When it comes to dining in and around Tokyo during your vacation in Japan, as with much of Japan, the culture is one dominated by fish; indeed, the very symbol of Tokyo itself is a fish. It is well worth rousing yourself a little earlier than usual and heading towards the Tsukiji Fish Market , known more commonly as the Tokyo Metropolitan Wholesale Market.

The fish here is often so fresh it’s still moving! The sale of fish is frenetic and absorbing, and afterwards it is highly recommended that you enjoy the best of Japanese fish with an exquisite sushi breakfast. If you’ve never tried this, you really don’t know what you’re missing. Japan is full of contrasts, and to enjoy these at their best, it is worth diving in and participating in the traditional customs.

Before you leave Tokyo, another aspect of Japanese culture which you must experience, and which contrasts very much with the throb and hum of the city centre is the Hamarikyu Gardens. No vacation in Japan would be complete without seeing these beautiful gardens, occupying nearly a quarter of a million square meters. They provide a tranquil resting place, through which you can enjoy a pleasant walk, perhaps enjoying a traditional tea ceremony at the teashop in Nakashima, in the centre of the gardens. The flowers here are fabulous, with peony gardens and a plum tree grove just two examples of the areas which appeal, whatever the season. Depending on when you visit, there are a number of displays and exhibitions which demonstrate more of Japanese culture, such as Japanese goshawk hunting.

Many people today associate Kyoto with the international climate agreement (or disagreement!) but this former imperial capital of Japan holds many fascinating opportunities to explore the culture of Japan, and offers many contrasts with the city of Tokyo, despite both names being an anagram of each other. Situated within a beautiful, lush valley, harbored by the mountains of the Tamba highlands, the city of Kyoto offers the chance to experience Japanese customs, such as the art of calligraphy.

Of all written languages in the world, Chinese and Japanese symbols are perhaps the most artistic and decorative. Although Chinese sounds very different from Japanese, they use all of the same letter shapes, and it is well worth experiencing this for yourself. A true master can help anyone to feel the beauty of creating these exquisite shapes. If you’re interested in learning new things, then perhaps rather than taking part in a tea ceremony, you should indulge yourself in learning more about it, and experts in Kyoto will be more than willing to teach you this ancient tradition.

But for a real taste of Japanese culture and tradition during your Japanese vacation, there is one opportunity hidden away in Kyoto which is hard to find, yet well worth it if you know who to ask. The secrets of the Geisha have long been known, yet rarely understood; rarer still is to experience it for yourself, and even the Japanese consider it a great honor.

However, it is possible for westerners to experience the song and dance ceremonies of the Geisha, and nowhere else are the contrasts with modern western cultures more noticeable than amongst the culture and heritage of Japan’s Kyoto region. But be warned, you may well find yourself tearing up your return tickets once you have embraced the culture of a vacation in Japan.

Where online can I find Geisha girl tattoo images?

they are all over the internet but a lot of them aren’t very good. i’ll try to find some good ones for you. also i wouldn’t get a tattoo of a tattoo. you should just try to find pictures of geishas that you like or geisha art but not a tattoo. however, this is my favorite geisha tattoo done by my artist.

Do You Remember This Happy Couple??

We caught up with Big Brother lovebirds Rex and Nicole doing a spot of shopping in Harvey Nicholls in London. After that they headed to Notting Hill for a bite to eat at Rex’s father’s restaurant, before heading to Harley Street to pick up some x-rays.

Just recently Rex was involved in a fight outside a club in Soho. “These five guys thought I was starting a fight and jumped me. I was really scared. It was five against one and I was surrounded.” Once Rex had got his x-ray results he was very guarded about the outcome. Speaking about the fate full night both Rex and Nicole admit if they had the choice to go on Big Brother again they wouldn’t claiming, “There are so many positives to it, but also so many negatives.”

Meanwhile we here plans for their new Osbourne style reality show are getting underway and Nicole revealed, “They’re going to follow our every move. They will film Rex opening a new restaurant and me with all my fashion.” Hang on did we miss something?

Mario Marconi Is Caught Cheating On Lisa…

Sleazy reality TV star Mario Marconi (née Shaun Astbury) was caught cheating on his long-term girlfriend Lisa Appleton just hours before he proposed to her live on camera in the Big Brother house.

CCTV images have emerged of Mario kissing a blonde woman in a hotel bar, just a few hours before he headed to the Big Brother studios in Elstree to declare his love for Lisa. Mario met the woman in question, Victoria Anderson, whilst she was enjoying a drink in the Premiere Inn bar *sniggers* with her boyfriend. When Victoria’s fella nipped outside for a cigarette, Mario swooped in on the girl and was caught kissing her on camera. Moments later, hotel security images show the couple entering the lift and heading toward Mario’s hotel room. The pair didn’t emerge from the boudoir for nearly five hours.

Mario has since admitted kissing the girl, but denied doing anything else, claiming she had “set him up”. Yes, yes of course, we’re sure it was all perfectly innocent. Is it possible for a Japanese girl to have blue or green eyes ?

I’m watching Memoirs of a Geisha and the girl in this movie is Japanese but she has blue gray eyes. I am pretty sure she is not supposed to have western relatives. So if you don’t have any western relatives at all is it possible ? i mean how can any of her relatives possibily carry alleles for blue eyes ?

Mendelian genetics dictates that phenotypes (physical, measurable characteristics) in offspring must come from the parents and the parents alone. Therefore, if two Asian parents both have black eyes (and we assume black is a dominant eye color trait), it is very unlikely that the offspring will have any color eye other than black.

However, unusual eye colors in offspring is is not unheard of. Random mutations and gene crossing are always possible thanks to the sexual nature of human reproduction. In addition, eye color is more complicated than the classic dominant and recessive allele: some are dominant, some are seemingly dominant but recessive, and some even mix the two.

On the other hand, you must also realize that it is just a movie. Memoirs of a Geisha is a work of fiction that uses the motif of the color gray in Chiyo’s eyes as well as many other places in the novel. While genetically possible, the use of gray in the movie is purely a creative decision that stems from a Japanese fixation with eyes and magical realism.
